FARMINGTON PUBLIC SCHOOLS OPEN AUGUST 14, 2009
General Registration Information
This information is given to keep you informed regarding the procedures that will help you start school smoothly. If you have questions that are not answered in the following material, please feel free to call the office of the school in the zone where you reside or call 324-9840.
Which Students Need to Register
Most students who attended Farmington Schools were pre-registered last spring. Those students who pre-registered do not need to register for this fall semester. They will report to their classes on the specified dates.
Parents of elementary students not registered may register at the school in the zone in which they reside starting August 5 through August 13. Children need not be present.
Middle School students that did not pre-register last spring need to pick up a registration packet between August 5 and August 13 at the school in their zone of residence. All schedules will be distributed on the first day of school. Students who have moved from one zone to another since pre-registration should register at the school in the zone in which they now reside. Senior high students not pre-registered, please see Farmington High School, Piedra Vista High School and Rocinante High School for registration information.
Immunization records are required for children entering the Farmington Municipal Schools for the first time (see immunization requirements) before the student is allowed to attend school.
Late Registration
Students not registered by August 13, 2009 should report to their appropriate school building the first day of class. The principal or his/her designee will assign the student to classes and make appropriate arrangements to acquire the registration information needed.
School Lunch Program
A hot lunch program is provided in all schools except Rocinante High School. Further information will be made available to the students concerning lunches before the start of school. See insert for Public Release for F & R priced meals.
Compulsory School Attendance Law
The state law holds the parents responsible for regular attendance of their children and requires children who are five prior to 12:01 a.m. September 1 and who have not reached their eighteenth birthday to be in regular attendance in an approved school.
Child Find Activities for Special Education Services
Children suspected of having vision, hearing, motor, language, or learning problems may be referred to the Exceptional Programs Office, 1400 E. 20th St., 599-8617.
Screening of individual children may be arranged by appointment. Several screening clinics for preschool children are conducted periodically throughout the year. School-aged students suspected of having learning difficulties should be referred to the school counselor, classroom teacher, or building principal.
All kindergarten students participate in a general screening of vision, hearing, and developmental skills. Screening is provided as students enroll for kindergarten in the spring or during their first month in school.
All screening procedures are free. For more information please call the Child Find Coordinator at 599-8625.
IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
New Mexico State Law requires the following for school entrance:
1. MMR ñ Measles, Mumps and Rubella
2. Diphtheria-tetanus-whooping cough (DPT) immunization
3. Polio immunization
4. Hepatitis B immunization
5. Varicella (Chicken Pox) immunization
Booster immunizations must be up to date. All students entering kindergarten must have proof of having had a DPT and polio booster after their 4th birthday. Two doses of measles, mumps and rubella vaccine are required. One dose of Varicella is required for students grades 2nd through 7th. Three doses of Hepatitis B is required.
A booster of tetanus, diphtheria and pertussis (TDaP) is required for all students entering 7th through 9th grade if it has been at least 5 years since the last tetanus-containing vaccine. It is encouraged for older students (Grades 10-12) if it has been at least 5 years since their last tetanus-containing vaccine. Tdap is required for grades 10-12 if it has been 10 or more years since the last tetanus-containing vaccine. A certificate of these immunizations with the dates specified needs to be presented for recording by the school upon the child's enrollment.
Children who are to be exempted from the above requirements for health or religious reasons should present a certificate from a duly licensed physician or an affidavit from an officer of a recognized religious denomination. Such certificates or affidavits must be renewed each year.
IMPORTANT NOTICE
Each student must provide proof of immunization before the first day of school. It is recommended that the family doctor or the Public Health Service be contacted immediately if the immunizations are not complete.
For a child to be administered a medication at school there must be written permission from the parent or guardian. A prescribed medication to be taken at school must have the doctor's written instructions and a parent or guardian's permission. Permission forms are available from the school nurse and must be renewed annually.
ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS
School Hours
Elementary school hours are 8:00 a.m. to 2:45 p.m.
Kindergarten
Those children pre-registered for kindergarten last spring need not register. Children who are five years old prior to September 1 must attend.
Classes will begin for kindergarten children on August 14. If you have not been notified of your child's assignment by noon August 13, please contact the principal of the school where your child is registered.
There will be full day kindergarten programs in 2009-2010 at all the elementary schools in the Farmington Municipal School District.
If the child is to ride a bus, parents should accompany their child to the designated bus stop and meet the child there at the end of the school day. It is wise for your child to carry identification information, i.e., name, address, and phone number especially on the first day of school. We encourage your child to ride the bus on August 14th as this is the one day that the majority of the students on the bus will be kindergarteners. Parents are welcome to follow the bus and meet their child at school on this day.
