“Ready! for Kindergarten,” a program hosted by the Farmington Municipal Schools Title I Department aimed at getting four- and five-year old children prepared for kindergarten in 2020 or 2021, made its debut on Tuesday.

The lobby of FMS Central Office was transformed from atrium to childcare center, allowing parents to learn techniques and games to prepare their child for kindergarten. The sessions were led by Title I staff, teachers and parent liaisons.

“Parents teaching parents is an important part of the Ready! for Kindergarten program,” Ann Diehl, director of Title I at FMS, said. “Parents are a child's first and most influential teachers. It's powerful to hear these techniques from other parents."

Every year, all across America, four out of 10 kids are already behind on the first day of kindergarten according to Data shows students who start school behind, stay behind throughout their academic career. The “Ready! for Kindergarten” program empowers parents to be effective teachers for their children by optimizing natural curiosity and nurturing learning and development.

Participants were given games and activities to take home and play with children. These take-home packets will help toddlers arrive to kindergarten with the skills and knowledge to be successful throughout their early years at Farmington Municipal Schools.

“Play is how children first learn and these activities provide families with the building blocks to learn and teach,” Diehl said.
