Farmington Municipal Schools has announced the Class of 2020 will celebrate virtual graduations. The plans for virtual graduation complies with current stay-at-home and social distancing orders from New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham as well as guidance from the New Mexico Public Education Department and keep the health and safety of students, families and staff as a priority.

UPDATE: After receiving approval and guidance from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham and the New Mexico Public Education Department, Farmington Municipal Schools virtual graduation ceremonies will continue as planned with an addition of on-site, drive-thru diploma distribution for San Juan College High School, Piedra Vista High School, Rocinante High School and Farmington High School. Details of these distributions will be announced to the Class of 2020 by their principals and FMS will update the community accordingly via Facebook and the FMS website.

Farmington Municipal Schools recognizes the virtual ceremonies and diploma distributions are different from traditional ceremonies and are perhaps even disappointing for the Class of 2020. After many hours of conversation, planning and advocating for special and memorable graduations, virtual ceremonies with drive-thru diploma distributions offer the best balance of timely celebration, community safety and compliance with state health orders and guidance.

As San Juan County progresses through the Governor’s phases of reopening,  Farmington Municipal Schools will continue to collaborate with high school leadership teams and local agencies to provide the Class of 2020 with other celebratory events with more options for celebrating and commemorating graduation, including opportunities for photos, increased interaction with classmates and possible parades. Dates, locations, details and guidelines for these possible ceremonies are in the initial stages of planning and will be shared with the senior class and the community when finalized.

Farmington Municipal Schools congratulates the Class of 2020 on their graduation and looks forward to celebrating this special class of seniors and their great accomplishments at the scheduled graduation dates and at events in the future. FMS thanks seniors, their families and the community for their continual cooperation and efforts in keeping the entire community healthy and safe.
