FMS In The News: Farmington, Bloomfield wrestling teams scores high marks in competition. By Steven Bortstein, Farmington Daily Times. The Farmington High School girls wrestling team took home third place in Saturday's New Mexico Activities Association's Region 1 Championships, held in front of an enthusiastic home crowd at the Scorpion Gym. The Lady Scorpions finished behind Volcano Vista and Miyamura and ahead of West Mesa and Cleveland High Schools among more than 30 schools who sent wrestlers to the event. Piedra Vista finished ahead of Aztec. Finalists from this event will be moving on to the state championships, scheduled to begin Saturday, Feb. 17 at the Rio Rancho Events Center. These students performed a demonstration of instruments and music for local elementary schools to get them excited for the possibility of enrolling in band next year! Last week FMS Student Nutrition was invited by FoodCorps to join in the New Mexico Food and Farms Day Awards. This event is to celebrate and further encourage local growers and their partnership in providing healthy foods to the community. Mr. Kevin Belin, Director of the Navajo Preparatory School Diné Bizaad Institute, held a wonderful presentation on defining cultural parent engagement strategies, stories, and songs around Késhjéé' or Navajo Shoe Game this week. Approximately, 70 parents joined Mr. Belin for a fun evening of learning, stories, and songs. Thank you for coming, FMS families! Thank you, Mr. Belin! In Navajo culture, the Shoe Game, which is played at night and in winter, consists of hiding a wound yucca root ball within one of several moccasins and taking turns guessing where the ball is. Ms. Patton from Hermosa Middle School starts her guitar and general music class off with a bell-ringer consisting of reading music and deciphering the frets and chords associated with it.
